Is it bad to hold in a Sneeze?

Express – March 2023

Dr Stuart Sanders

Doctor Stuart Sanders, Private GP at the London General Practice, features in a recent article discussing the unknown dangers of holding in a sneeze.

Holding in a sneeze may cause a sharp rise in blood pressure and this can can have some serious consequences. For example a sneeze may be powerful enough to cause a brain aneurysm to rupture. A brain aneurysm is a congenital abnormality, more often present from birth, and the rise in blood pressure from a sneeze may cause it to burst.

Other risks associated with holding back a sneeze include the risk of pushing infection and mucus into the ear or the risk of acute sinusitis.
