Dr Paul Ettlinger, Private GP at The London General Practice, outlines some of the dangers of sleeping pill addiction, the symptoms to look out for and advice on what to do if you if you are worried that you have a problem with sleeping pills.

Footballer Dele Alli’s recent admission to becoming addicted to sleeping pills and how commonly they are used has opened up the debate on over use of sleeping pills and the dangers of addiction. For people suffering insomnia, sleeping pills can be an effective way to help ensure a good night’s sleep but overuse can lead to addiction and withdrawal.

If you are concerned about sleeping pill addiction then some of the signs to look out for include increased use and a feeling dependency or an inability to mange without them. Defensive of your use of sleeping pills is also a good indicator that you may be addicted. Just some of the symptoms of sleeping pill addiction to look out for include confusion, memory loss, drowsiness, hallucinations, depression and mood swings.

In the case of sleeping pill addiction Dr Paul Ettlinger advises that you try to get help as soon as possible. Discuss options with your doctor as going “cold turkey” is not advised, and the dosage often needs to be slowly reduced over a period of time.
