The impact of aging on cancer
GB NEWS February 2024
Angela Rai, private GP at The London General Practice, contributes to an article discussing the impact that aging has on cancer. With Buckingham Palace announcing that King Charles has been diagnosed with cancer Dr Rai looks at some of the reasons why age is an important factor. King Charles was recently in hospital due to an enlarged prostate that was benign but an unspecified form of cancer was discovered.
The risk of cancer increases as we age with people past the age of 50 in the UK advised to stay alert and have regular health check ups. Early detection of cancer means earlier intervention and can lead to more effective treatment.
“Most cases of cancer are in people over the age of 50 and a third of all cancers are in people aged 75 years and over.”
As well as age, there are many lifestyle factors that affect the risk of developing cancer. These include:
- Smoking
- Weight
- Diet
- Exercise
- …and more.
