Doctor Paul Ettlinger, Private GP at The London General Practice, contributes to a recent article outlining some of the telltale signs of diabetes.
Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects millions of people worldwide, with an estimated 1 million adults in the UK without a diagnosis. It is important to be aware of the symptoms of diabetes in order to seek proper treatment and management. Some common symptoms of diabetes include feeling thirsty all the time, urinating more than usual, unexplained weight loss, and tingling in feet or legs.
“Tingling and numbness in the feet, shiny smooth skin and loss of sweating resulting from damage to the autonomic nerves (those which are involuntary and control body functions), sores and cramps in the calves due to lack of blood supply).” He added: “Any of these could indicate that you might be diabetic.”
What are the two types of diabetes?
There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body does not produce insulin. Type 2 diabetes is a condition where the body does not use insulin properly, leading to high blood sugar levels.
How is diabetes treated?
Diabetes is typically treated with insulin, either through injections or an insulin pump. In some cases, oral medications may also be prescribed to help manage blood sugar levels. It is important for individuals with diabetes to work closely with their healthcare team to develop a treatment plan that works best for them.
