Do we need electrolytes?
Vogue – March 2025
In a recent article Dr Elise Dallas, Private Harley Street GP, provides insight into electrolytes and why they are important for our health.
“Electrolytes are essential minerals that carry an electric charge when dissolved in water…Electrolytes include sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, phosphate and bicarbonate.”
The importance of electrolytes such as magnesium, calcium and potassium, as part of a healthy diet has led to an increase in the popularity of supplements. However electrolytes can also be found in many of the foods we eat daily with Potassium for example being found in bananas, leafy greens, potatoes, beans and avocados.
Electrolytes are important as not only do they help facilitate nerve and brain function. they are also responsible for maintaining fluid balance, regulating muscle contractions and supporting hydration. A deficiency of electrolytes can also result in symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, nausea and confusion.
These are just some of the reasons why a healthy, varied diet is important in maintaining our overall health. In some cases the additional need for supplements may also be advised. During menopause, for example, Dr Dallas explains that there is an argument for electrolyte supplements. “Similarly, during menopause, symptoms like excessive sweating and night sweats can lead to shifts in electrolyte balance.”
