Dr Angela Rai, Private central London GP, discusses some of the health risks to look out for while on holiday and offers some helpful tips on staying healthy while abroad.

When travelling one thing Dr Rai advises is to use hand sanitiser or wash your hands regularly, especially in crowded spaces such as airports and stations. Good hygiene helps to reduce the risk of transmission especially in the case of viral and gastrointestinal infections.

Swimwear should be washed every time it is used and in this sense should be treated like underwear. If you don’t have washing facilities then a gentle hand wash in warm soapy water is advised.

Other helpful advice includes being careful with ice, salad and raw vegetables, especially in countries where tap water is not considered safe.
