Dr Elise Dallas, women’s health GP specialising in menopause at The London General Practice, shares her expert knowledge on early menopause and offers advice for anyone going through what can be a challenging and life-altering time in their lives.

Early menopause can affect both your mental and physical health, and identifying the symptoms to look out for can help you get the help you need sooner. The main indicator or symptom that you may have early menopause is not having your period regularly or your periods stopping completely.

“Perimenopause is when you have symptoms of menopause, but your periods have not stopped. Perimenopause ends and you reach menopause when you have not had a period for 12 months – if this happens before the age of 45 years this is early menopause.”

Other symptoms can include:

  • Hot flushes and night sweats
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Low mood or anxiety
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Problems with memory or concentration
