Is Measles dangerous in adults?

GB NEWS February 2024

Dr Stuart Sanders

Dr. Stuart Sanders, Private General Practitioner at The London General Practice, outlines the symptoms of measles in adults and advises that they can often be mistaken for other illnesses. Measles, a highly contagious viral infection, is commonly associated with children. However, adults can also be affected by this disease.

Some of the symptoms of measles include:

  • A distinctive rash
  • High fever
  • Sore throat
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Fatigue

“Adults should be concerned about measles, particularly if they have other illnesses such as chronic respiratory diseases or are immune-deficient.”

The best prevention for measles whether young or old is vaccination. Adults who have not received the vaccine or are unsure of their vaccination status should also consider getting vaccinated. Measles can easily spread among unvaccinated individuals, and adults are not immune to the disease.
