What is Longevity?
Recently there has been a huge surge of interest in “Longevity” .
Longevity Is not only about living longer but also how we extend the healthy period of our lives and delay or minimise the development of chronic diseases and disability. Essentially, we want to increase our healthspan; maintain physical, mental and social health as we live longer.
Health span is the period of life free of major diseases and disability. The main concept is that life can be divided into two phases: A period of healthy ageing and a period of age-related diseases.
We are already living longer than our ancestors, however with a heavy disease burden. We are encountering more chronic diseases- cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease to name a few. Ageing is a major risk factor for all of these diseases.
Many individuals moving through middle age and older adulthood today have a strong desire to remain healthy and to have active and productive lives until the very end- this is known as optimal longevity.
How do we slow ageing and increase the healthspan?
Putting a greater emphasis on preventing disease and maintaining health.
Preventing disease one at a time is of course important, however it needs to be approached from multiple directions to reduce many of the chronic disease if we are to improve lifespan. The thinking towards extending healthspan has shifted. How do we interfere with the biological processes by which ageing increases our risks of developing these disorders? We need to inhibit the basic mechanisms of ageing to delay the development of all these disorders as a whole.
