What is the best treatment for asthma?
Independent April 2024
In this recent article Dr Katy Kasraie, private GP at The London General Practice, offers some insight into the causes of asthma and treatment options available. Asthma is a lung condition that causes chronic inflammation and hyper-responsive airways. This can present with symptoms such as shortness of breath, a chronic cough (especially first thing in the morning or at night) wheezing and chest tightness.
Asthma is typically triggered by environmental factors such as allergens, respiratory infections, air pollution, and tobacco smoke. Genetic predisposition also plays a significant role in the development of asthma.
“Try and reduce any other allergen exposure by keeping your home as dust-free as possible… Also if you suffer from a pollen or grass allergy, or suffer from seasonal hay fever, it’s important to manage your hay fever to reduce any asthma flare-ups”
Diagnosis of asthma typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination and lung function tests. Treatment options include inhaled corticosteroids, bronchodilators, and lifestyle modifications to manage symptoms and prevent exacerbations.
